Hand-built in five month by the local community and volunteer architects, the Surau in Sekinchan, Malaysia, makes use of easily available local materials and reuse materials to create a new model for Surau construction that is beautiful, simple and humane.

The guiding principle in the construction of the Surau in Sekinchan was a respect for place while addressing the functional requirement of a Surau, resulting in a contemporary structure that fully engages its local environment.

Within the constraints of budget, the Surau in Sekinchan uses innovative techniques and detailing that combine new principles for tropical design and improvement for Surau design.
