ATSA Architects 9th Anniversary

The year 1999, the last year of this century was a year whereby most Architectural firms were struggling to cope with the financial crises, which hit Malaysia late in 1997. After one year of negative growth in 1998, Malaysia in contrast experienced some renewed growth of around 5% in 1999. However, growth in the construction industry is always the last to catch up and always the first to get hit.

Fortunately, ATSA managed to keep it going and managed to stay above water. Some of our projects were shelved temporarily but most of our projects continued through 1999. Some of our projects are featured in this brochure are projects that we either proposed or carried out in 1999.

With 1999 coming to the end, we hope that the year 2000 and the following years will be better years. As a young and upcoming practice, we look forward to the new millennium with a better economy scenario/situation; to continue our quest to provide good quality Architecture.

  MALAYSIA GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT
This four-storey building for MGSM was built next to an existing Economic faculty building and is to house the new temporary graduate school for UPM. The building was built with an extremely low budget and will be given to UPM once their new Campus is completed elsewhere. These rectangular shaped building was designed to facilitate lecture room set up and are conducive for learning. The typical floor plan takes on a single central corridor layout with lecture rooms on both sides. The upper floor of the building is reserved for the staff to operate. The exterior columns were expressed to show order within the building with its large windows, recessed to shade the Lecture rooms from the hot sun and heavy rain.

  ENGINEERING ANNEX BUILDING
This building is to house the new Information & Science faculty at UPM and its design concept was developed along the typical plan of a Malay pavilion building. The design incorporates a series of open corridors that flows into a verandah, enclosed court yards gazebos and landscape areas.
This building was constructed with an extremely small budget with the use bare hollow concrete blocks as the main material for the skin of the building. The structure, precast hoods and lintels are then clearly expressed by the different texture and color of the different material used.

  VICE CHANCELLOR OFFICE
Wrapped at three sides by existing Administration building, this new building complement its surrounding buildings through its use of bare concrete columns and fins together with full height green tinted glass. The interior employs natural stone finish and solid "tembusu" paneling to its walls, and with the use of modern office furniture and fittings, its interior presents a clean line modern interior setting.

  VISITOR CENTER
The structure presents itself as a glass sculpture on a vast landscaped field.Set against the backdrop of the University's administrable ground, the building acts as an information hub to the various faculties and buildings within the university's premise.Within the Information Kiosk site, an outdoor sculpture was to be commissioned to a renowned local Artist, En. Latiff Mohidin.

LEISURE FARM JOHOR, MALAYSIA

  LAKESIDE RESORT DEVELOPMENT
A resort style concept for a residential development in Johor. This particular project is a part of a 1500 development, set in a ranch style development concept which will eventually be self contained. It will also consist of a golf course, a polo club, themed bungalow development, and townhouses. The Architecture concept used here is typically contemporary vernacular. The use of water, which flows in the middle of the development, resembles a waterfront kampong that can be found in many remote riverside villages in Malaysia. The lakeside development consists of Resort Bungalows, Semi Detached units and low rise Apartments.

  BALINESE STYLE BUNGALOWS
Situated within the Leisure Farm development and close to the Lakeside resort style residential development, we were also commissioned to design 30 units of Balinese style bungalows on an average of a 17,000 sq ft plot of Land each. Two layout plans, a single storey and a double storey respectively were eventually used for this themed development. Both layout plans, employ an open concept that integrate outdoors spaces as part of the indoor spaces. A lotus pond, courtyard and a sala were incorporated in the design for each bungalow units.

  LINK BUNGALOWS
Within the same development, leisure farm was also experimenting a different product, which employs a contemporary modern concept for luxurious Link bungalows. The development is based on a Zero lot layout concept with 25 units of link bungalows that over look a golf course. Each unit will have a water feature, louts pond and a "vanishing" edge pool.

  LAKESIDE RESORT SEMI-DETACHED
A themed development project in Leisure Farm targeted for Japanese Expatriates to make Leisure farm as their holiday resort. Eventually, 30 units of 2 different designs will be built in a designated enclave. The Architecture follows closely the proportion of Japanese Architecture, but we use a much more streamline design to reflect a contemporary tropical feel.

Mixed Development Selayang Raya
This Mixed-Development in Selayang, consists of 3 Condominium towers with a total of 400 units of apartments and one block of 4 storeys shop houses. The typical floor plan is based on a Point block plan, which can accommodate 8 units per floor.

  BUNGALOW AT SIERRAMAS SELANGOR, MALAYSIA
A joint design project with another Architect to carry out a design proposal for Sierramas. Our design proposal here is the wining design for 2 different layouts for 16 units of bungalows at Sierramas. The Architecture is typically contemporary vernacular style with borrowed elements from the Colonial era. The roof form and enlarged structures is particularly distinguishable and reflect the vernacular style that is reminiscent of many colonial style residences that dominated the Architectural scene of that era. However, many of the nomenclature used were stream lined and updated to reflect the present day Architecture.

FERRY TERMINAL WILAYAH PERSEKUTUAN LABUAN, MALAYSIA

A part of the ferry terminal being a mode of entry to Labuan, this project is also an urban design project to enhance the waterfront town of Labuan and shall be a major tourist attraction The Architecture of the building uses a Vernacular roof form that houses the immigration offices, waiting areas jetties and also a duty free commercial complex.

  SIRIM KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, MALAYSIA
A tropical Modern decon style Architecture was used when we were commissioned to design Sirim's Sabah Headquarters and Laboratory in Kota Kinabalu Industrial Part. In our design, we decided to use various building materials to reflect Sirim as technologically Advance Corporation in the field of setting standards in Malaysia.

TAMAN SELATAN MEMORIAL CENTRE PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA
We were commissioned to undertake this prestigious Putrajaya Project at Taman Selatan in Putrajaya. Taman Selatan is the designated area for burial grounds for all major religions in Malaysia and is located at the edge of the Central "hub", a ceremonial plaza dedicated to Malaysian fallen heroes. The function of the building is to house and the record historical events that involves sacrifices and contribution of Malaysian for the betterment of others. The design of the building follows the circular shape of the Ceremonial Plaza with its front elevation covered with full height diorama commissioned to a few Local Artists.

  SRI DAMANSARA CONDOMINIUM MALAYSIA
Phase 1
This first phase Sri Damansara Development Condominium totaling 432 units is part of a major condominium development on Phase 1 A-1 in Sri Damansara.

The first phase consists of 2 high-rise blocks and several low-rise blocks with shared amenities and garden/park. The first phase is now completed and fully occupied
Phase 2
This second phase was broken into several sub phases due to the economic downturn with a total units of 412.

The second phase consists of mainly mid-rise and low-rise blocks and are now under construction.

In our design, we used Vernacular Architecture in a linear floor plan to fit into its tropical surrounding. Phase 2 will also have it's own shared amenities and garden/park exclusively for Phase 2 dwellers.
Phase 3
The 3rd phase is waiting for planning approval by the authority and will eventually have 3 high rise, point block totaling 500 units of apartments. Due to the terrain, one of the blocks is located lower than the twin blocks and as a result, we proposed 2 separate sets of shared amenities to cater for the needs of the apartment dwellers. In the third phase, we used Vernacular Architecture to compliment the second phase.
