  SURAU TAMAN SELATAN PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA
Background Information
This Musolla or Surau is located at Taman Selatan, the burial grounds for Putrajaya township.

Design Approach
Our design approach was to do away with all of the traditional cosmetics often associated with the Surau and instead focus on designing the Surau in a contemporary style. We used the interplay of solids and voids to determine the exterior character of the building and a series of outdoor/indoor areas within the building. Large doorways were introduced at the prayer hall for natural lighting and good cross ventilation. The main feature of this Musolla is a half dome which acts as a light well to illuminate the Mihrab directly below it.

Site plan
Background Information
An extension to the existing Islamic Museum Complex located at the fringe of the Lake Garden in Kuala Lumpur.

Design Approach
This 4 storey building is actually a separate building located next to the main Islamic Museum Building. The design employs a rich tapestry of Islamic architectural planning and influences such as the use of lattice screen in the facade treatment with strong geometric patterns applied in the urban spaces of the building surrounds.

This building together with the original Islamic Museum will eventually complement each other and make up part of an Integrated Islamic Complex in Malaysia.

Site plan

Model view of the surau

Design Approach
The design is a modern interpretation of a traditional Islamic building for religious purposes where the details of traditional elements was incorporated into the design using contemporary materials and methods. The building is oriented towards the “Qiblat” with the prayer hall as its center. Open verandah ways, toilets and ambulation wraps around the front of the building. The “Mimbar” located at the Western side of the building site prominently as a focal point facing the direction of the “Qiblat”. The ground entrance into the Surau is reminiscent of a traditional Islamic gateway of many traditional mosques of the Middle East.
