ATSA Architects 8th Anniversary

The year 2000 will be ATSA's 8 years of establishment and to commemorate this auspicious year and millennium, we would like to reflect back to the last 8 years by producing our company brochure showcasing some of our best works.
Through out the last 8 years we have been fortunate to have the opportunity to design and propose various types of buildings from small bungalows , shop houses, mass houses to hotels, institutional, and office buildings.

We have also grown from just the founding members to approximately 20 staff.
It was a very challenging yet satisfying experience for us to start the practice from scratch and able to break into the already crowded and highly competitive world of architecture. The economic crises which started in 1997 and lasted into the new millennium was again difficult but full of learning experiences on surviving the crises.

However, the coming of the new millennium and being at the tail end of the recession has brought about a renewed energy for ATSA to continue its aspiration in creating buildings which reflects the future of Architecture in Malaysia. We will continue to strive for designs that are both innovative and conducive for our clients.
In this new millennium we seek greater opportunities with our clients and continue to collaborate with them to produce designs that are elegant, spirited and inspiring.

  SIRIM KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, MALAYSIA
Located at a new industrial park called the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park, the new Sirim Building will be testing lab similar to the one in Shah Alam for the State of Sabah. This building will be the first phase of an extensive complex which will sprawl over a 14 acre site.

Our design approach here is to design a building which is high tech in nature using steel fabricated materials and metal cladding. The building is also oriented in a north-south orientation to avoid direct sunlight. A center landscaped courtyard is also introduced to soften the area.

We were commissioned to re look into the design and image of all of the existing Celom branches and to produce a design that is Warm, Friendly and Approachable. The Celcom KL branch was the product of this exercise between Celcom and our office.

  PAREMBA CENTRAL MARKETING OFFICE MALAYSIA
With the aid of the computer generated drawings we were able to present our design in a more realistic way . This interior layout and computer rendered drawings were very helpful for our clients to visualize our drawings from various angles.

Top view (plan) showing the two curvlinear building from and the enterance structures.
The project is design competition for Celcom's corporate headquarters in Seberang Jaya. In our proposal we introduced two identical oval or curvilinear-shaped high rise structures around an open central courtyard at the ground floor. We approached this building as a sculpture which will rise from this low lying area. Its curved walls and slanting roof profile were designed to demonstrate the interplay of the two structures. We also proposed the use of metal cladding and off-form concrete to accentuate the exterior facade of the building.

  HOTEL JALAN SULTAN ISMAIL MALAYSIA
This building will soon be built along Jalan Sultan Ismail and feature a 6 star 150 all suite room hotel, comparable to the best in the world. The building calls for a modern classical style to project its grandeur with a base, body and a a head . Although, the architectural language here is classical, we managed to convince the client to adopt a design which is a marriage between both classical and modern style.that is tastefully carried out through out the exterior facade.

  CELCOM NEW IMAGE MALAYSIA
A typical layout for a Celcom service center which was the winning entry in a invited competition organized by Celcom (M) Sdn Bhd

  BERTAM MOSQUE BERTAM, PENANG, MALAYSIA
The initial design proposal in Bertam, Penang, with a maximum capacity of 6000 people is to be located on the edge of a lake. This congregation Mosque is inspired by the simple natural geometry of the national flower, the Bunga Raya (hibiscus). An onion shaped dome is used here t ocrown the Mosque and the main praying hall. An 80's high Minaret is located as a focal point at the center of the main entrance.

  SRI DAMANSARA CONDOMINIUM MALAYSIA
We were commissioned to design three parcels of Condominium development in Bandar Sri Damansra totaling approximately 1300 units. In our designs of each parcel, we introduced a vernacular architectural style with large overhangs and "Lanais" to depict a truly tropical setting for high-rise dwellings

  RESORT MALDIVES DHUNIKOHU ISLAND, MALDIVES
The concept for this resort is getting back to the basic life and living with nature. This is a design proposal for a self contained resort in Dhunikohu Island in the Maldives to cater solely for international tourists. The resort is located on a 40 hectares of land in the middle of the Indian Ocean and access is either by boat or sea plan from the airport. It is a natural hideout for tourists in a beautiful island setting. The design is base on a tropical style using thatched roof and timber walls.

COLD STORAGE BUILDING RESTORATION KUANTAN, PAHANG, MALAYSIA
This building was previously an ice factory and was left abandon for many years. Extensive restoration work was carried out to convert this building into 2 units, shop office As it is purportedly to be the oldest modern building in Kuantan , the City Council insisted that we maintained the exterior façade. Additions to the building were to follow the proportion of the existing building.

  SMART SCHOOL PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA
Precint 5 Smart School was a closed competition organized by PerbadananPutrajaya. We approached our design proposal by incorporating design features of traditional colonial schools and adopting it into a contemporary vernacular style. The design features a center football field surrounded by the building blocks.

MALAYSIAN COMMUNICATION & MULTIMEDIA COMMISION TECHNOLOGY PARK, MALAYSIA
The concept for this building was inspired by the Wau Bulan. It symbolizes the freedom in the life and era of advanced information technology. The geometry is an overlapping of pointed ovals and quarter shaped dough nut which house the administration block and auditorium respectively.

CELCOM R&D CENTER TECHNOLOGY PARK MALAYSIA, MALAYSIA

Overview showing the two triangle buildings.
The building form was derived form the trapezoidal shaped site. This unique site was used as a basis to impose a series of parallelogram which then develops into the two triangle shaped buildings. The larger triangle shaped building is the core of the R&D center and the smaller triangle houses the auditorium and the exhibition gallery, In between the two buildings is a glass Atrium. An open courtyard is placed in the center of the core building for natural lighting. and a natural tropical arboretum featuring a single fully grown Meranti Tree as Celcom R&D signature tree. At the plaza outside but within the site, a surau is proposed, as a public facility. The landscaped plaza can be then used as an extended area for an outdoor praying area.

  VARIOUS HOUSING PROJECTS MALAYSIA
During the last 8 years we were commissioned to design various housing projects. One of our client is the Land and General Group. Several type of Housing projects were designed by us for Lembah Beringin, Sungai Buaya and Sri Damansara that range from linked houses to low, medium and high cost apartments. We also carried out mixed development type projects in Sabah for TTPT which is due to start construction soon.

TOLL PLAZA SOUTH KLANG VALLEY EXPRESSWAY (SKVE), MALAYSI
The mushroom like and flora roof structures were inspired from the roof forms at KLIA. These lightweight structures will act as gateways for key destination along the SKVE which stretches from Kajang to the West Port at Pulau Indah.

  MUSOLLA TAMAN SELATAN, PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA
This Surau is located at Taman Selatan, the burial grounds for Putrajaya township. Our design approach is to do away with all of the traditional cosmetics that is often used in a Surau and instead focus in designing the Surau in a contemporary style. We used the interplay of Solid and Voids to determine the exterior character of the building and a series of outdoor / indoor areas within the building. Large doorways were introduced at the prayer hall for natural lighting and cross ventilation. The main feature of this Surau is a half dome which acts as a light well to light up the Mihrab directly below it.

RESTORATION OF A KAMPONG HOUSE GOPENG, PERAK, MALAYSIA
This typical Malay house is approximately 80 years old and is located in a Durian Plantation in Gopeng, Perak. The main house requires extensive restoration work to return it to its past glory.
Minimal replacement were made to the original building materials as not to lose its historical value.
A new wing will be built separately but connected to the main building to cater for modern amenities as this historical house will be converted into a weekend retreat for the owner's family
