Background Information
A design proposal / competition for an integrated transportation terminal cum commercial and retail development complex to upgrade the existing Butterworth to Penang Island ferry terminal. The existing stand alone Butterworth terminal built-in the 70’s requires a major upgrade as the present make-shift outdated terminal does not integrate well with the other modes of transportation.
The site measuring approximately 3.5 acres is located next to the ferry terminal. Currently, the ferry terminal and the proposed site is separated by a KTM railway tracks. Presently, the proposed site is an open air bus terminal which connects travelers using the local buses through overhead bridges over the railway tracks to the ferry terminal.

Design Approach
Our design approach is to provide an integrated facility to connect all three transportation systems; i.e. Ferry, Rail and Bus Systems into a single terminal building with into a shopping mall. Roof top parking are also provided above the building commercial floors. The organic shape buildings and planning is used to reflect the free flowing nature of the various transportation mode coming together and organized into a single modern building. The free flowing roof form is also used here to reflect the floor planning of the building resulting in an interesting modern organic architecture. |
