FOLIO 2006 - 2007

CARREFOUR HYPERMARKET, KLANG, SELANGOR, MALAYSIA

Site Plan

Background Information
We were commissioned in late 2006, to design one of many new generation of hypermarket for Carrefour. Being one of the top 3, hypermarket retails Malaysia, Carrefour has embarked to built hypermarkets that will be pleasant, identifiable and conducive for shoppers. With stiff competition amongst the top 3 hypermarkets in Malaysia, shoppers are now able to choose their favourite hypermarket to come and shop. The challenge for our office together with Carrefour is to design a hypermarket to meet their needs and to ensure shoppers will continue to do their shopping at Carrefour.

Design Approach
The site measuring approximately 8 acres is located the city of Klang fronting a busy road and accessible from a nearby highway. This hypermarket is a single storey hypermarket with its trading floor is placed around several retail shops.

The total overall built up area of this hypermarket is approximately 150,000 sq ft. The trading area alone is approximately 93,000 sq ft. The rest of the built up area is taken up by 20 retail shops and food court.

Several external design or facade design options were proposed before the final design was chosen for this outlet. In the final design, we expressed the corner entrance of the building with a large entrance canopy which is identifiable from a distance and along the busy road. A skylight is also introduced to light up the entrance lobby, before entering into the hypermarket area.

The facade of the hypermarket is treated by expressing its external column structure which supports the canopy roof. The corporate colour of red, white and blue is also used on the external walls. The this colour are used to identify the building as a Carrefour Hypermarket.

Option 2
Design Approach
Option 2 is similar in design from option 1, the defference is the used of circular, fan shape canopy expressing the corner entrance. The oversize double height canopy structure is designed as a unique feature that would greet shoppers as they enter into the building. It is also designed as an iconic structure that would be seen from a distance.

Option 3
Design Approach
In option 3, we approach our design is to the break the monotonous box like building by introducing triangle shape wall panels on the facade of the building. The triangle shape elements are also “taken” from Carrefour’s logo as repetitive feature that covers 2 sides of the building. The triangle shape feature also acts as a light well allowing natural light into the hypermarket space below.
